Before Buying A Mountain Bike

Mountain Bike Ideas

There are a few things you should consider before buying your mountain bike. The most important thing is to figure out what type of riding you will be doing. If you will mainly be riding on paved surfaces, then a cross country or road bike would be a better option. If you plan on mostly riding off-road, then a mountain bike is the way to go. There are a few things you should consider before buying your mountain bike.

1) Size

Mountain Bike

If you are buying a mountain bike, it is very important that the size of the frame fits your body. The wrong fit can result in fatigue or even potential injury. You should be able to stand over the top tube (the horizontal bar between the seat and handlebars) but not raise too high above it when straddling (sitting on one side). Most bikes will have height charts to assist you with finding your proper size.

2) Type of riding- cross country, downhill, all-mountain

Mountain Bike

Before buying your mountain bike, you need to decide what type of riding you will be doing. There are three main types- cross country, downhill, and all-mountain. Cross country is the most common type and is suited for paved surfaces or light off-road use. Downhill is designed for riding down steep, rough terrain. All-mountain is a versatile type that can be used for a variety of different activities.

3) Wheel/enduro, freeride

Mountain biking ranges from smooth surface riding to tough technical trails where good braking is essential. Cross country (XC) bikes tend to be lighter and faster than other types of mountain bikes making them better suited to long rides and races on smooth trails. Trail bikes are perfect for recreational use and general trail riding, they have slightly wider tires that grip well in a variety of terrain and the suspension is set up for comfort rather than speed. Downhill (DH) bikes are designed for gravity-assisted riding, featuring extremely robust frames, forks and wheels together with heavy-duty brakes and suspension. If you’re not sure what type of bike to buy, it’s always best to speak to an expert at your local cycle store.

4) Price

Mountain bikes can range in price from around £200/$300 to over £5,000/$7,500. The price will depend on the quality of the bike as well as the features. If you are planning to use your bike for racing it will cost significantly more. If you plan on using it for daily transportation, also consider the costs of maintaining and storing a bicycle.

5) Look/style

Mountain bikes come in many different styles with various features so this is really up to personal preference. You can special order a bike if you would like one that isn’t offered at your local shop. Depending upon which type of riding you are doing, different styles may be better suited to your needs. The most important thing is finding something that fits your body well and that you find comfortable to ride.

6) Wheels

Mountain bike wheels are usually 26″ or 27″. If you live in an area with flat surfaces, a 26″ wheel may be better because it is lighter. However if you live somewhere hilly then a 27″ wheel would be better as it has more momentum and can roll over obstructions easier. The type of riding that will be done should also be considered when buying your mountain bike since certain wheels are better suited to different types of trails. These considerations should help you choose the perfect mountain bike for you. Follow these tips before buying your next one!
